Age of Conan Re-Visited, Re-Analyzed, and Re-Reviewed!

Age of Conan has launched a "re-review" campaign among several top fan sites, and approached us to take a second look at the game and highlight for our users some of the benefits and enhancements seen at AoC since launch. They're currently running a "Tell your friends to come BACK to Hyboria" campaign that gives players 2 free weeks playtime to experience some of the changes!  Recently, with Update 5, a new area came into the game known as Tarantia Commons.

Tarantia Commons offers level 70 and up players new exciting game features that take place in the area including gang wars, riots, and several new encounters. Encounters can occur differently depending upon your standing, how you've gotten to where you are now, what is going on in the area, and previously encounters that could have lead to the encounter you're fighting now. There are also a few new factions in the area that fight for control of Tarantia, one gang owns the rooftops and the other the streets, you're able to take on missions for either group and improve or hurt your standing with them based on the missions you choose to play. By giving both the rooftops and the streets their own unique set of missions and events the game creators have added double the content into the same amount of real estate, and allowed players to mingle with these factions in the way that they see fit.

Here's a developer introduction to Tarantia Commons:

While Update 5 brought lots of new content into the game, there have also been major improvements over the past several months that are worthy of a mention; we've done our best to detail some of them below:

1. Character Statistics Updates: The statistics system has been changed to include a new functionality that allows a players core stats to interact with their armor and weapon ratings adding meaningful usefulness to specific classes that utilize them the most.

2. Improved Itemization and Abilities: Items play a larger role now than they originally did. The addition of statistics to items and abilities make weapons and abilities useful and an important part of gameplay.

3. New Social Pets and Improved City Life: As your guild city grows, its population becomes more dense and varied with new vendors, animals and patrolling NPC’s that make cities more enjoyable and rewarding. There are also new pets such as cats, dogs, and snakes that can be purchased from those vendors the follow you on your epic journeys.

4. Technical Stuff: Lots of scalability has been added for visual options, allowing for users with great systems to see great visual detail, and those without them to turn down settings as needed. They've also fixed some of the memory leaks and technical issues that caused difficulty early in the life of the game.

5. New Content: Ymir's Pass, Xibaluku, and Tarantia commons offer players hours and hours of fun playtime.

Ymir's Pass is one of the most expansive areas in any MMORPG and reaches a climax when you try to free the Frost Fathers son who's bound in shackles on top of a massive structure. He flails and slams around the whole time the you're trying to cut his chains and ward off the evil that captured him!

Xibaluku has several instances and an amazing design of traps and puzzles that must be worked for you to make your way deeper into the dungeon. Several of the instances have unique gameplay opportunities that players can take advantage of or ignore, and you're able to re-play instances that really appeal to you.

Tarantia Commons is, of course, the latest addition to the game and offers players the ability to take part in events that are happening in the area in real time. You might find yourself facing off against another player who's actively trying to squelch the rebellion you just incited or vice-versa, and area wide updates are communicated through the chat channel to give you up-to-date intel on how the event you're involved in is proceeding.

6. PVP/Sieges: A notoriety system now exists that will lets players who commit murders be hunted or achieve legendary status by having their name feared by all as they become a notorious murderer! Other advancements include the ability to earn experience in PVP situations, improved performanc of siege gameplay with expanded tools for guilds to carry out these assaults, and changes to city building and battlekeep construction including live guards!

These are just some of the updates we've seen from running around and doing a little research on Age of Conan. These and many more await those who give this game a second chance or try it out for the first time via the Age of Conan Two Free Weeks preview!

I've been playing WoW since beta and personally I've just gotten really bored with it.  I've been downloading free trials like it's nobodies business and tried many of the F2P MMOs out there.  But I have to say, after I tried AoC and got the hang of the combat system I am blown away with the game.  For me, it's a fresh take on combat... not having an auto-attack getting some used to but it makes the experience more interactive for me.

Another thing that's been great for me is the leveling speed.  It's so much faster than WoW was for me.  I probably don't have more than 10 hours game time and I'm already level 18.  Maybe it's just me, but that seems a lot shorter than WoW.  That will give me more opportunity to reroll some other toons later on.

I haven't ever played AoC before now so I can't say how far it's come from it's original state.  But I love it at its current state.

    10/10 for me.

After being so hyped for this during beta as well as initial release and being severely disappointed at the time, I was willing to see if the game had been "fixed," as the PR suggests.

I've seen precisely one crash since I started playing again, and that was due to a faulty custom UI (trying to update an old one and not succeeding). So, props there. Memory leaks still exist but the game eventually cleans them up (meaning unless you zone to major places 3 or 4 times in a row, it'll still run fine).

I'm still not pleased with the amount of Zoning required in this game, but I don't really ever expect it to be taken care of.

The Necromancer pets are still messed up. It's messed up differently than it was a year ago, but still not functional the way it should be.

Healing is still less fun in AoC than it is in other MMOs, though I can't quite pinpoint why.

Graphics are still on par with what I expect in today's market (good), but they're not amazing either.

Gear design in general is severely lackluster. It doesn't look good at any level, doesn't have enough difference from one character to another, and doesn't have enough impact on your toon in general. This could be because they have -way- too much "specialized" gear, i.e., This piece of gear is good Only for Necromancers who happen to spec this way, and no other class. If a piece of gear is made for ONE build of ONE class, it should have a more noticeable effect; on top of that, finding gear is difficult enough as it is.

The UI is still... lacking. It shows promise of what a good UI -could- be, but is still laggy for no reason (and no, it's not my comp). Some of the spell decision's that FunCom has made (buffs, debuffs, damage spells notably) are still making me go "wth?" because they make no sense, and they still don't have PVP balanced in the least.

Overall, I'd rate AoC at 6.5/10. They've made notable improvements in the application stability... and done just about nothing for fixing faulty game design. This translates out to the game no longer crashing but your class still feeling off no matter what you do.

    Just my two cents.

Poor Game Master or any Support at all! Account managment are **** like it was at game launch.

I tried to play this game again, but FailCom with their failed game managment killed my interest.

    Game 9/10. Other account/ingame support 0/10.

I'm having a blast right now in AoC. The game is so gorgeous and overwhelming with its lore and content. I can smell the blood with every strikes that I make. Never felt it would be this so great.

    Wolfshead,

I think you need to read my comments CAREFULLY and stop being a hothead. It would have been decent of you to say I got your comments wrong after oopomopoo replied, but that would been too much, hey.

    Thanks oopomopoo for the reply.

Ok i see what you mean Bloath. I am not sure of all that as i have said before. However they stated above that they added more quests and such. Healing, not sure how it is. Even if it is spamming, its still the same as other MMOs. Spamming FoL on a tank, or just tossing hots on random people in your group. Its the same thing.

And PvP balance was really that bad? I hope it got better then. I assume they made changes, as it has been quite a while since AoC has been out.

Oh thought of something else. Grinding was the best way to level in WoW for quite a while. (Before TBC.) Back then quests gave mediocre rewards, and were somewhat scarce. There are many times where you finish all quests around your level, and you are still too low to do the 'next tier' quests. (IE Duskwood > Wetlands > Ashenvale > ? Grind ? > STV (Next Tier)

I asked about siege pvp performance because despite having the top of the line computer at the time (really), it was laggy as hell. The original promises of huge siege battles had to be withdrawn, but even small scale sieges were unplayable.

I asked about pvp balance because the balance was so far off it made WoW pvp look like the holy grail. This is to be expected in any new mmo off course, but it's still a valid question if class abilities have been consistently tweaked over the last year. If it's been fairly stagnant, then I know it's not balanced. Unless Funcom presumes to have the arrogance to consider their pvp balanced after just a year of play.

Yes I enjoy healing, alot of ppl do. But in AoC the heals were so insignificant that all you did was load up aoe hots and dps (which was vastly inferior to real dps classes). AoC might as well have deleted the healing aspect entirely imo. So I'm wondering if this still is the case.

AoC at the launch did not have enough quests to get you to lvl80. You had to grind and on top of that grinding was more efficient to level. On top of that you had to fight for your grind mobs from griefers who were already lvl80 and bored.

So that's why I asked these questions and apart from the mention that some memory leaks have been fixed, I don't see anything in this review or in the subsequent discussion that these issues (issues for me) have been addressed or not.

Not trying to rack AoC down, but neither do I want to blindly trust Funcom's PR.

Oh, and they are NOT stopping expansions for WoW. Wow is also NOT going to go F2P. I really have no idea where you are getting your information.

Also, i REALLY hate to be this guy, but please use correct grammar. I mean this in the best possible way i can, but it was very hard to understand all of what you wrote. Read this example:

    Correct Grammar

"I helped my uncle Jack, off a horse."

    Incorrect Grammar

"I helped my uncle jack off a horse"

    See the difference?

Bloath, the siege pvp is your computer. There is not much that AoC can do. If it lags, you need a better processor / graphics card. Healing? In what game is healing actually fun? Warhammer is alright, its not a bore.. but it certaintly is not fun. You never say "Man i cant wait to heal <X> tonight! Its gonna be awesome!" Unless there is something else (loot / money, etc)

Pvp balance... No game has 100% pvp balance, i am sure AoC made some changes to better pvp equality, but there is no game with true pvp balance.

Grindfest - not sure if AoC has quests, but this is the only 'legit' question i would ask. :)

Oh, this advertisement is basically stating that most of the glitches and such has been fixed.

  • Bloath said
    Sat, Jul 18 2009 9:52 PM ()

So is Siege pvp completely lag free?

Is healing AoC actually interesting now?

Has there been any progress in pvp balance?

    Is it still a grindfest?

These are the first few questions that pop into my mind that hasn't been addressed. This 're-review' looks more like AoC advertisement.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love AoC to succeed, but this 're-review' isn't being critical at all so how can it help me determine if AoC is back on track?

I say if more games started supporting MAC computers they would make more money...seriously.

If the company is making all that money off games, make it compatible with MAC.

Ive been playing aoc since beta and the game has turned around 100%. If you played the game you would know that the servers are always full of people. Global chat has tons of people talking 24/7. Guilds are raiding everyday and you can get into instance groups all the time.

Funcom has been patching the day lights out of the game the past 6 months.

Also i wouldnt listen to half the people bashing/bitching about the game. why? because most of them dont try to make the game better (meaning going onto the test server and report bug) or havent signed into the game in months!'

    </quote>

to bad they let us pay like 40euro for the game then another 15euro for a few months of beta testing.

    Guys,

Only reason, i do not play AoC like Warhammer (do have a WAR copy on my work computer, but do not take that computer home anymore) is because it is only supported on WINDOWS!

Yes the biggest marketshare of players is windows, but then again your biggest competitor and target for marketshare gives their game platform compatbile on Mac and continue to support the OS in a BIG way.

Bottomline people have invested to much money in WoW and it will require something very special to be successful as WoW. AoC and WAR are not those games because of various reasons, but basic reason is their all same old same old.

I have no ties to WoW, since I am a consumer and want the best bang for my money and a game I will enjoy.

The expansion pack for WoW was not that impressive (actually it was poor) to be quite frank, but AoC and WAR launches did not do enough to pull the potential players from WoW.

Believe me Blizzard know if there is real competition, you will either see a new MMO release from Blizzard or real change in new expansion pack. Blizzard had scouted their competition and knew their were no real threat.

Oh yes i know the way consumers think, as i myself am a consumer (As well as used to be a provider, ran out of business due to far too much competition.) I understand that once you leave a game, there is little to make you come back. I also understand that certain things will bring people back, such as this or expanisions. WotLK brought me back to wow. (Then pushed me away a month after i dinged 80. :p) This is something that will greatly affect players. They came to play AoC for a reason. They have patched the game, as well as giving previous members 2 free weeks to try the game out once again. In my opinion, you would need to be a bit dumb to not take this offer. (Or simply have moved past the AoC phase.)

    oopomopoo,

You make the comment the past is past and present is present, standards have moved on since WoW. Do not expect consumers to use 5 years old standards for a new game released now. Unfortunately you do not understand consumer thinking, something, I have to deal with on a daily basis.

In your opinion the game has exceeded expectations, you are not million of consumers out there, that AoC wants to play their game, this is hard world and game developer know that their have one chance.

I am not writing this from personal point of view, but from factual evidence of what happens when you get a game launch wrong in PRESENT market environment.

WoW is offering the same incentives that I am talking about and it is successful, why should I swap to AoC?

Do not expect to get something wrong in this present market and want people to come back, unless you missing the BIG news, there is a downturn in market with games sales down 18%.

Also why do people even compair a mmo thats been out for 5 years to a mmo that has been out for a little over a year. I mean i would hope wow would run great etc.

Souliisoul about your comment "You have one chance in this present gaming environment and there are no second chances!!". I agree but that dosent mean people need to go out of there way to bash and try to hurt the game even more.

I personaly like aoc because it has a darder more adult theme. I also think the melee combat system is awesome. Now i play wow alot. I have my 310 speed ulduar ach mount but when i get sick of wow i play aoc.
