[AoC] Is the Switch From WoW Really Worth It?
AoC is totally different than WoW Both are great games, so I am not knocking WoW here, but there is a lot in AoC that you will never see in WoW. First off the quests are more detailed and seemingly longer than WoW, but I have only been up to Level 40. Combat is much more fun, especially if you play a melee type; as it is more challenging and rewarding - fighting 5 foes at once is very gratifying - feels more action packed. And, if you get a fatality, it just makes it so much more fun. I've seen about 10 different fatalities from my Conqueror, but I have only seen 2 different ones on my Tempest of Set. I left WoW about 1 year ago, because I got so sick of the repution quests. Everything worthwhile in the game required me to either kill the same mob 7000 times or run the same instance hundreds of times. In the beginning Blizzard said they would never do that... What happened? In AoC, I have yet to grind, all my leveling has come from questing. Leveling is also pretty quick, I made 3 levels in 5 hours last night. Yea, there are classes that are seemingly OP, like my ToS - but that is okay - I tire of the same ol' junk. I don't play my ToS anymore because it seemed to powerful and I wanted to get more into the fray. But, I like the differences in the classes, and I'm perfectly okay that there are classes that are sronger than me.
AoC is a great time, everything is new, no more rep grinding, & no more raid grinding. I love the fatalities! It is so much fun!
In a nutshell.
Do NOT switch.
Now with that said, here is why.
I left WoW after 362 days played. I played on a PvE server and did a lot of raiding.
Here is what AoC has.
1. Broken classes. Can you imagine a priest doing more damage than a mage with the ability to heal? The highest DPS classes are priests. They are not in shadow form. There is one form and they can heal and dps. There are lots of other issues with broken talent trees as well.
2. Crafting and Gathering. This one is kind of cool. Everyone can gather anything. The way that they do the leveling up is to have you get a rare item to move up to the next tier. The problem? The rare items are VERY rare. There have been people who have gathered over 500 of an item to get the rare. This creates frustration. Crafting - broken and in constant flux. They recently put in items to get the first tier of Alchemy done. It only took 6 weeks after release.
3. PvP - there is no rewards yet. People were promised a full fledged PvP system. Well, it ain't there. There is no penalty for beating up people 60 levels lower than you. There is no reward for killing people your level.
4. Quests - Level 1-20 is beautiful. You can solo it and not need anyone to help you. You can play at your pace. Level 20-40 is not that bad. You can do lots of quests and there are a few dungeons. Some of the dungeons are partially broken, but not the end of the world. Once you hit the mid 40s you learn with AoC is about. It is forced grouping. The mob placement and the volume of the mobs pretty much requires that you join up with at least one person. That is either good or bad depending upon how you feel about it. Once you get into the 50s you will find yourself grinding or doing repeatable solo instances to level.
5. PvE - the reality is that it is a tank and spank. There is not much you do other than maybe a stun, but it is tank it and spank it. They finally fixed T2 raiding by putting the drop that is supposed to happen for the key into the game with the last patch. They had 'death touched' a guild to get to T2 before. To me, that read that they needed someone to test T2.
6. Mass departures - Funcom has pissed a lot of the player base off. A lot of people are not renewing. This is making the server less populated and that is not good for a MMO. To put this in perspective, I play on a FFA PvP server. I was in a main gathering area. I left my character near a road that is well traveled. I left for 15 minutes and came back. I was not killed. Four weeks ago, I was constantly under attack.
7. Back to balance . . . A level 60 beats a level 80 in PvP? Makes no sense to me. However, the PvP system for resists/etc is much different than PvE.
8. Client stability. The client crashes. No, it crashes a LOT. It has lots of Out of Memory issues. The horsepower to play this game is much greater than Wow.
9. Mail, Bags, Auction - too much to say here other than, "They suck!"
10. Transportation - uhh yeah, this is shitty. You will see a lot of people saying, "Kill me please" this way they can port across the map.
Now that I have given you the bad, here is the good.
1. Casting - I play a caster and they let you queue a cast prior to the current cast going off. That is good design.
2. Level 1-20 - That was VERY fun.
3. Graphics - the graphics are very good. The greater power of the machine you have, the better they look.
4. Guild cities - when they get everything fixed and siege battles it looks like a lot of fun.
5. Terrain - I am not sure if this is good or bad. The game is not very flat. With wow, unless you were horde and in the barrens, it was pretty flat and straight line. This game will have you go around in circles to get to the top of a mountain. At times it is very nice, other times it is annoying as hell.
6. No running back to get your body. They do it a little different. When you hit the GY, you rez automatically. There is a nominal penalty that you get for death. Now if you go back to where you died, you can get your tombstone. That removes the 30 minute penalty. The problem with this on a PVP server is that you do not rez with 100% of your mana/stam/hp. You will get ganked. They did put in a debuff that people can not attack you immediately, but the timeframe for that is too quick.
With all of this said, my sub ends in 10 days. I suspended the account. At level 80, I can not find a compelling reason to log in. I do not feel like leveling a bunch of alts (I had 7 60+ toons in wow.) I will keep reading and seeing what they do. I may revisit it towards the end of the year.
You should really go and buy Age of Conan if youre tired of WoW and interested of AoC. I played WoW for 1 but got tired of it after like 8 months.
Ive tried all other mmos out there except Everquest, all games were either too much like WoW or bad. So I can proudly say that AoC is the first good mmo since WoW. It currently lacks a bit continent and most of the endgame stuff are delayed. But Funcom is working hard and promise us that these will be added during the summer and autumn.
But the game is already really good, I would go for it if I were you, its the best choice you would ever make since WoW^^
i would like to point out for you all who says age of conan has many buggs ...
well i agree with you but then i Say this How many bugs does wow have ?
and then How long have Age of Conan Excisted if you compare it to WoW?
Soo dont complain so quick about AoC when they have excisted about 2 Months nearly.
if i would rate conan oout of 11 i would give it a 8 since i couldnt use it any longer after the Video Card update that put my computer out of Buisness soo to say but im still sticking too that it is a very good game.
For those of you who say 'give it more time' who say 'wow was broken at first too'
Remember we are talking about a game that people are paying for.
It is BETA and should be either free for very very cheap.
Someone is making LOTS of money of this broken piece of junk. Money they don't deserve.
Or maybe they do deserve that money, after all, people are stupid enough to pay, and blind enough to come here and post about how great it is. People get all hyped about something and just can't seem to get real.
Don't accept this gaming model where you toss crap out for sale then maybe slowly fix some of it.
Sure, any product may have issues, but this is ridiculous.
Big thumbs down for AoC.
Where's the game made by gamers who want every aspect to be really awesome?
You wont find those guys in the AoC dev team.
Funcom does great Job. they work 10 times harder and faster than WoW dev team. WoW is good only with Addons.. and they dont even bother to fix/or make anything..they leave it all to their customers (with addons), while funcom pays people to make a nicer solid UI etc... and why not pay for a game that i like,to become more complete and solid?
you can search all you like to find a new mmo without bugs..you wont find... you can find something that is half complete(and you like the concept) and with your help and support you can make it Awesome.
If you cant do that...wait 2 to 6 months and come back. then you can say if funcom really DID or DID NOT done anything to improve their game.

and why not pay for a game that i like,to become more complete and solid?
Good question, why not?
Anarchy reeks of incomplete coding after 7 years.
Be wary of Funcom. Don't expect your $ to go into the code once they reach their goal saturation.
Anarchy is a fun game, much better than AoC in every respect except the newer graphics.
But still an interface hell. Still buggy. Still working on things a real coder could have fixed years ago.
...wait 2 to 6 months and come back. then you can say if funcom really DID or DID NOT done anything to improve their game.
Ummm already waited. And waited, and waited, how many times did they delay?
And all year the beta testers and coders working diligently and THIS is what AoC looks like?
It is still EARLY BETA!
Quit acting like Funcom is some great company, they have done nothing for the Gaming community. They ignore and delay and they laugh all the way to the bank.

kolafOne thing I really enjoy in MMORPGs is the trade skills, ever since UO that has been my favorite part and unfortunately it's one thing AoC, imo, lacks. They just aren't exciting or fun to me. The architect sounded pretty neat but only one per guild is needed. Also I'm lvl 55, been playing since early access and am bored with the game. It starts out very fun and exciting, with the voices for quests but it's gone downhill for me, I dont even play that much anymore. :\
